Candles and Christmas traditions: where does this custom come from?

At Christmas, they're everywhere. On windowsills, in the center of tables, in Advent wreaths, or at the foot of the tree
Candles are an integral part of the magic of Christmas , far beyond their simple decorative function. But do you know where this warm and symbolic tradition comes from?

Today, we're telling you the story of Christmas candles , and why they continue to bring our homes to life during the holidays.

✹ A light in the night: the spiritual origins

Long before Christmas as we know it today, candles already symbolized light in the darkness , hope in the heart of winter , and human warmth .

🔾 In pagan traditions, the winter solstice was celebrated with fires, torches and candles, to mark the gradual return of the sun.

🔾 With Christianity, light became a powerful symbol of the birth of Christ , perceived as the arrival of the "light of the world." Candles lit at Christmas thus take on a profoundly spiritual meaning.

🎄 Advent candles: a ritual that goes back a long way

The Advent wreath , as we know it today, originated in 19th-century Germany. It consists of four candles , which are lit each Sunday before Christmas.

  • First candle: hope
  • 2nd candle: peace
  • 3rd candle: joy
  • 4th candle: love

This ritual helps mark the passage of time until Christmas and instills a strong value each week. Even today, many families continue this tradition by lighting a candle every Sunday of Advent.

 the Christmas tree!

Yes, before electric lights, we used to place real candles on the branches of the Christmas tree 🎄. This tradition dates back to the 17th century, particularly in Germany. On Christmas Eve, all the candles were lit to create a magical atmosphere.

Of course, this represented a certain danger (dry fir tree + open fire = risky combo 😅), and this practice was replaced at the end of the 19th century by the first string lights.

But the idea remained: points of warm light in the fir tree , to evoke magic, warmth, and gathering.

đŸ’« Candles today: between tradition and well-being

Today, while the candle remains a powerful symbol of Christmas , it has also transformed:

  • It has become perfumed , to add a sensory and emotional dimension.
  • It fits into our cozy rituals : a hot bath, an evening of reading, a tea break under a blanket

  • It is offered as a gift, like a sweet, intimate, warm gesture.

Each candle lit at Christmas is a way to slow down , enjoy , and create a unique atmosphere .
