Why a candle is the best souvenir from Brittany 🌊

A magnet ends up on the fridge, a keychain at the bottom of a bag. A fragrance, however, can rekindle an entire place in a second.

📖

Emotion

Scent is the sense most directly linked to memory. A candle brings back the sea air, a Breton kitchen, or a rainy evening much faster than a photo.

🕯️

Utility

You light it, you enjoy it, you share it. A souvenir from Brittany that you experience daily rather than an object placed on a shelf.

🌊

Identity

Our fragrances carry the soul of South Finistère: sea spray, driftwood, salted butter caramel, Sunday cakes.

The three stories of our Breton collection 📜

Our Brittany collection brings together three original stories, written here, in the workshop. Three different ways to tell the story of Finistère: the sea, the vigil, and gourmet delights. Click on each card to read the story.

The Checkerboard Guardian

Olfactory pyramid
Cistus marine • Lotus • Cedar

The story of a checkerboard lighthouse standing on its rock, and of the one who watches to ensure the light never goes out.

There are lights that no one notices, except those who come home late. Every evening, when the wind turns and the horizon fades, the guardian climbs the steps one by one and lights the lamp.

She doesn't know the names of the boats she guides. She only knows that somewhere, someone is waiting for them to return. The fragrance captures all of that: the iodine of the rock, the wet freshness of the morning, and the weathered wood of the railing she has touched forever.

The Salty Vigil

Olfactory pyramid
Salted butter caramel • Coconut • Milk

The memory of a Breton winter evening, when the rain taps against the panes and the caramel slowly cooks on the stove.

Outside, the wind rustles the shutters. Inside, chairs are pulled close to the table, someone tells a story for the hundredth time, and no one interrupts them.

On the stove, the sugar slowly darkens, the salted butter makes its entrance, and the whole house smells the same. It's this precise moment we wanted to capture in wax: when you no longer want to go home.

The Golden Crumbs

Olfactory pyramid
Milk and praline • Warm cake • Butter and vanilla

The smell of a Breton cake fresh out of the oven, and the handful of crumbs that you snatched before anyone else.

The cake was always too hot, yet we still went for it. A cut in the golden crust, a few crumbs falling onto the oilcloth, a knowing glance pretending not to see anything.

Butter, vanilla, sweetened milk, praline. Nothing complicated, and yet it's that smell that lingers, years later, when you recall childhood Sundays in Brittany.

Artisanal candle workshop in Loctudy, Finistère, Brittany

One workshop, two artisans, small batches

The wax is melted then precisely scented, slowly poured, left to rest for the necessary time. Each candle is then hand-checked before leaving the workshop.

We work in small batches, which sometimes means slight variations from one piece to another. This is the signature of handmade, and we are committed to it.

Frequently asked questions about Breton candles ✦

Answers to the questions we are most often asked at markets.

What souvenir should I bring back from Brittany?

An artisanal candle is a souvenir from Brittany that is both useful, decorative and emotional. Unlike a classic decorative object, it recreates a complete atmosphere: the sea air, a gourmet kitchen or a winter evening. At Les Fondeurs d'Histoires, each candle also comes with a collector's card that tells its story.

What to bring back from Brittany when you really want to please someone?

For gifts, gourmet scents almost always work: salted butter caramel, Breton cake, praline. They evoke Breton pleasures and appeal to everyone. If the person enjoys fresher atmospheres, opt for marine notes like La gardienne à damier.

Are your candles really made in Brittany?

Yes. They are designed, poured and hand-finished in our workshop in Loctudy, in southern Finistère, in the heart of the Pays Bigouden. We work in small batches and each piece is checked before shipping.

What kind of wax are your Breton candles made with?

We use vegetable wax, selected for its gentle combustion and its good scent diffusion. The fragrances come from Grasse, the historical capital of perfumery, and the wicks are chosen according to the container.

Where can I buy artisanal Breton candles during a stay in Brittany?

On our online store, at our resellers, and directly at the craft markets and fairs where we are present during the season. Our next dates are listed on the page our points of sale.

Does a candle travel well in a suitcase?

Yes, provided it is kept away from direct heat and nestled in clothing to cushion shocks. If you travel light, scented wax melts are an excellent alternative: lighter, less fragile, same scent.

What's the difference between a candle and a scented wax melt?

A candle burns with its own flame and diffuses gradually. A wax melt is melted in a burner, without a flame on the scented wax, and diffuses faster and more intensely in a room. Both are available from us with the same Breton scents.

Can I order after returning from Brittany?

Of course. Our online store delivers everywhere in France and in a large part of Europe. This is even one of the most frequent uses: you discover a scent on holiday, then you reorder it once you return home.
