There are fragrances that smell good. And then there are scents that take you back somewhere, unexpectedly, in an instant.
Les Fondeurs d'Histoires was born from this simple observation: a scent isn't just smelled, it's remembered. Here's how, from a doodle in Loctudy to the lit flame in your home, a story takes shape.
Every scent always reminds us of a very specific moment in our lives. A happy moment, sometimes a bittersweet moment, sometimes a moment we thought we had forgotten. This is how olfactory memory works: it doesn't ask permission, it opens the door.
All it takes is a breath of air to find yourself five years old again, elbows on a kitchen table, waiting for something to come out of the oven. A fresh, citrusy note to feel the wind of a journey again. The smell of old paper to push open the door of a sleeping library.
The one your grandmother made without ever measuring anything. Warm sugar, vanilla, butter, patience.
Fresh, citrusy notes, a clear light, the persistent feeling of a summer that refused to end.

It's your story. It's also ours.
This is exactly why we wanted to create, around each candle and each wax melt, a visual and a short story. Not to decorate, but to reach out and take you somewhere else. Sometimes to a memory of your own. Sometimes to a moment you've never lived, and yet you'll recognize.
At Les Fondeurs d'Histoires, we never create a candle by starting with a fragrance. We always begin with an emotion, an image, or a question that tickles the imagination and refuses to let go:
What if this old library hid a secret?
Who lived in this forgotten house by the sea?
Why does this hot air balloon seem to never come down?
What does this vial left on an old apothecary's shelf contain?
For several days, sometimes several weeks, we imagine places, characters, their memories, and the small details that make a universe come alive. We fill notebooks, we sketch atmospheres, we seek references in old books, travels, films, architecture, or simply during a stroll along the coast.
Where stories are born, there's mostly a lot of paper, erasures, and forgotten coffee cups. Here, step by step, is the journey each of our creations takes before reaching your hands.
It all starts with a notebook open on the workshop table. A quick sketch, a few lines hastily jotted down, printed photos spread everywhere, colors we like, a texture, a light. Nothing is scented yet, nothing is decided yet, and that's precisely what makes this moment so enjoyable.
We then sit down to write. What setting, what era, who lives here, what secret lies dormant in this room? These first lines serve as our compass, because it's the story that tells us what scent we should look for, and never the other way around.
We then contact our master perfumer, based in Grasse in the south of France, the world capital of perfume. We give him the story, the atmosphere, the images and the words that compose it. It's up to him to translate all this into raw materials, into top, heart and base notes.
Then comes the most delicate part. We smell, we discuss, we start over. A little more vanilla here, a little less citrus there, a deeper woody note to enhance the ambiance. It often takes several back-and-forths between Brittany and Grasse before the fragrance tells exactly the same story as the text. Then one day, we open a bottle and we know.
Once the fragrance is validated, we can finally give a face to the universe. The illustration, the label, the collector's card, and the end of the story are written together, based on what the fragrance inspires in us once it's truly there, in the workshop.
The labels are printed and then cut here, one by one. The wax heats up, the fragrances are weighed to the nearest gram, the wicks are placed, the lids are engraved. The workshop then smells of all ten fragrances at once, and it's a happy mess.
A candle never leaves for your home the day it is poured. Combustion, cold and then hot diffusion, wick hold, color rendering, wax melt behavior: it usually takes several weeks of testing before final validation. Patience is part of the recipe.
Finally comes the moment we prefer. We produce in larger quantities, we apply the visuals one by one, we slip in the collector's card with its story. The creation is ready to travel, to settle in your home and to change your daily routine.
💡 Our goal: never to create "just a scent", but a complete universe, with a story, an image, a fragrance, and an emotion that all tell the same thing.

It is from all of this that Les Fondeurs d'Histoires was born. From the desire to pour wax, of course, but above all from the desire to make you escape the daily routine for the duration of a flame.
Every fragrance carries a story. Every story carries an atmosphere. And every atmosphere is just waiting for you to strike a match.
