Some fragrances simply smell good. And then there are scents that take you somewhere, without warning, in a single second.
Les Fondeurs d'Histoires was born from this simple observation: a fragrance isn't only smelled, it is remembered. Here is how, from a sketch scribbled in Loctudy to the flame lit in your home, a story takes shape.
One scent, and it all comes back 🌙
Every fragrance reminds us of a very precise moment in our lives. A happy moment, sometimes a bittersweet one, sometimes a moment we thought we had forgotten. That is how olfactory memory works: it doesn't ask permission, it simply opens the door.
One breath of air is enough to find yourself five years old again, elbows on a kitchen table, waiting for something to come out of the oven. A fresh, lemony note, and you feel the wind of a journey once more. The smell of old paper, and you push open the door of a sleeping library.
The one your grandmother made without ever weighing anything. Warm sugar, vanilla, butter, patience.
Fresh, lemony notes, bright light and the lingering feeling of a summer that refused to end.
Old paper, waxed wood panelling and the hushed silence of an old manor nobody has entered for a long time.
Family, friends, overflowing laughter and a little flame set in the middle of the table.
A scent memory is never just a smell.
It's your story. And ours too.
That is exactly why we wanted to create, around every candle and every wax melt, a visual and a little story. Not to decorate, but to reach out and take you somewhere else. Sometimes towards a memory of your own. Sometimes towards a moment you have never lived, and yet will recognise.
It all starts with a question 📜
At Les Fondeurs d'Histoires, we never start a candle with a fragrance. We always begin with an emotion, an image, or a question that tickles the imagination and won't let go:
What if this old library were hiding a secret?
Who lived in this forgotten house by the sea?
Why does this hot-air balloon never seem to come down?
What does this phial, left on the shelf of an old apothecary, contain?
For several days, sometimes several weeks, we imagine places, characters, their memories and the little details that bring a world to life. We fill notebooks, sketch atmospheres, and look for inspiration in old books, travels, films, architecture or simply on a walk along the coast.
The path of a creation 🕯️
Where the stories are born, there is above all a lot of paper, crossings-out and forgotten cups of coffee. Here, step by step, is the journey each of our creations makes before reaching your hands.
The sketch and photos everywhere
It all starts with a notebook open on the workshop table. A quick sketch, a few lines dashed off, photos printed and spread all over the place, colours we like, a texture, a light. Nothing is scented yet, nothing is decided yet, and that's precisely what makes this moment so enjoyable.
The first lines of the story
Then we sit down to write. What setting, what era, who lives here, what secret sleeps in this room? These first lines act as our compass, because it is the story that tells us which fragrance to look for, never the other way round.
Off to Grasse, to our master perfumer
We then contact our master perfumer, based in Grasse in the south of France, the world capital of perfume. We send him the story, the atmosphere, the images and the words that make it up. It's up to him to translate all of this into raw materials, top, heart and base notes.
Back and forth between noses
Then comes the most delicate part. We smell, we discuss, we start again. A little more vanilla here, a little less citrus there, a deeper woody note to strengthen the atmosphere. It often takes several round trips between Brittany and Grasse before the fragrance tells exactly the same story as the text. Then one day, we open a bottle and we know.
The visual comes to life
Once the fragrance is approved, we can finally give the world a face. The illustration, the label, the collector's card and the end of the story are written together, inspired by the fragrance once it is really there, in the workshop.
The workshop comes alive
The labels are printed and cut in-house, one by one. The wax heats up, the fragrances are weighed to the gram, the wicks are placed, the lids engraved. The workshop then smells of ten fragrances at once, and it's a joyful chaos.
Weeks of testing
A candle never leaves for your home on the day it is poured. Burn, cold and hot throw, wick behaviour, colour rendering, how the wax melt performs: it usually takes several weeks of trials before final approval. Patience is part of the recipe.
Production and collector's cards
Finally comes our favourite moment. We produce in larger quantities, apply the visuals one by one and slip in the collector's card with its story. The creation is ready to travel, to settle into your home and to take you away from everyday routine.
💡 Our goal: never to create “just a scent”, but a complete world, with a story, an image, a fragrance and an emotion that all tell the same tale.
