Tips for making the most of your candles during the summer

☀️ Summer is here, days are long, evenings are mild… and your candles deserve to enjoy it as much as you do! However, summer heat can affect their behavior. Don't panic: with a few simple steps, you can continue to delight in their scents and flame, even at 30°C. Here are our artisan tips to enhance your candle experience all summer long.

🌿 1. Adopt the wick trimming ritual
The secret to a candle that burns well in all seasons is a well-maintained wick. Before each lighting, trim it to about 5 mm using a wick trimmer or simple scissors. A wick that is too long produces an unstable flame, generates black smoke, and consumes wax unevenly, which is especially problematic in summer when the wax is already softer due to ambient heat.
This small gesture takes 5 seconds and completely changes the quality of your experience. At Les Fondeurs d'Histoires, all our vegetable wax candles are designed to burn cleanly, provided this fundamental ritual is observed.

🕯️ 2. Avoid drafts and direct sunlight
In summer, we open windows to air out, which is natural. But even a slight draft can make the flame flicker, create asymmetrical burning, and cause wax to drip down the sides. Place your candle away from open windows, fans, and air conditioning.
Another enemy of summer candles: direct sunlight. UV rays discolor the wax (especially tinted candles) and heat can soften, or even deform, your candle before you even light it. Store them in a cool, shaded place; an indoor shelf away from an exposed window is ideal.
⏱️ 3. Respect the ideal burn time
The first light is the most important: let your candle burn long enough for the entire wax surface to melt (what is called the "memory ring"). This prevents tunneling, where the wax hollows out a pit in the center without melting at the edges.
In summer, the rule is the same, but vigilance must be increased: with wax already softer due to the heat, the process is faster. Generally allow 1 hour per 2.5 cm of diameter. And never forget to extinguish your candle before leaving the room!
🌸 4. Choose the right scents for summer
Summer calls for light, fresh, and summery fragrances. Out with the heavy woody notes of winter, in with citrus, white flowers, fresh herbs, and marine scents. A lemon verbena, jasmine, or sea spray candle instantly transforms your interior into a summer sensory escape.
At Les Fondeurs d'Histoires, we offer creations designed for each season. Our summer fragrances are developed with carefully selected natural raw materials for their longevity and olfactory authenticity, even in high heat.

🧊 5. Store your candles properly
Storage is often overlooked, yet it is crucial in summer. Here are the golden rules:
- Ideal temperature: between 15°C and 25°C. Above this, the wax softens and can deform.
- Away from light: a drawer, a cupboard, or a north-facing room are perfect.
- Cover your candles with their lid or a cloth to prevent dust from settling into the wax and altering the scent.
- Never in the refrigerator: condensation upon removal from the cold can crack the wax and damage the wick.
✨ 6. Enjoy long summer evenings
Summer is the season for aperitifs on the terrace, dinners under the stars, and evenings that stretch into the night. It's the ideal time to set up a few candles outdoors, not in direct sunlight, of course, but in a shaded corner, on a garden table, or along a path. The flame of an artisanal candle, in the mildness of a summer evening, creates an unforgettable atmosphere.
Consider potted or container candles to limit the risk of dripping in light wind, and models with floral or marine scents to enhance the experience.
Summer and artisanal candles naturally go well together; you just need to know a few manufacturer's secrets to fully enjoy them. At Les Fondeurs d'Histoires, each candle is designed to offer you a unique sensory experience, in all seasons.
